Your Last Place New York Yankees
In sole possession of last place for the first time since 1975. They scored only 6 runs in the 4 game set versus the Rays and were a bloop single and an unfortunately placed line drive from being swept.
The Yankees .476 winning percentage is among the worst in the American League. Only Kansas City, Seattle, and Detroit have a worse winning percentage. It's a team that is in the middle of the pack in hitting but has virtually no speed. The Yankees have only 12 stolen bases and have been caught stealing 11 times, worst percentage in the American League. It's a team that looks very stale, they do a lot of standing around waiting on the long ball and aside from Wong (who's been absolutely fantastic) the starting pitching has looked average at best. The bullpen (especially in the 8th and 9th) is still the best in baseball. You can't afford to allow the Yankees to get ahead because they are lights out with Rivera and Chamberlin. Fortunately that hasn't been a problem for most teams so far. Just thought I'd point that out. Last edited by Political_Man : 05-16-2008 at 12:36 AM. |

The fact is that the Yankee's have the mega-payroll and increasingly have less and less to show for it. They will get better when they have A-Rod and Posada back, probably their best two hitters, but their starting rotation short of Wang is beatable. |

I've always thought, atleast about the last few dissapointing years for the Yankees, that the the team is victim of too many large egos. They've got the highest paid players in the world, theyve assembled a sort of dream team: A Rod, Jeter, Damon, and more. And now theyve got all these guys that think they know whats best for Baseball, and they just can't mesh together.
But at the same time, I take into account the whole Steinbrenner situation, and the change in coaching, even though its the same family, its still a transition. |

![]() Guess what? They still made the playoffs. I don't care how bad they are right now. I know they won't stay that long. The Yankees have been slow starters the last couple of years. This is probably the worst in a while, but they will not stay in last place. I guarantee that. |

The Yanks have followed the trend in the quickly aging AL with over inflated salaries, and geriatric run production. The Yanks are old and slow, and heavily relying on Weaver Ball to score - one problem, they lost a lot of power too (esp without Rodriguez). Will they be in the basement all year? No. Expect the Orioles to return to earth. Rodriguez will improve the team when he returns, but they need more than Wong to win the division, especially with the pitching that the Rays and the Jays match them up with. The Rays are going to be eating the Yankees dinner all year long... and strangely where DID all those Yankee fans go anyway Boston still wins this division. I think the Ray will fade later, but could challenge for 2nd or 3rd in the division. |

That being said, it is early now and they certainly won't finish in last place. |

mattingly is the man. girardi...wtf are they thinking? LOL
maybe the yankees could pick up ken griffey jr. later this year. i hear the sportswriters talking about after griffey hits HR #600, the reds will trade him (he is otherwise having an off year and getting slow in the outfield), probably to an AL team to be DH, and have a better shot at winning a title. i forget who NY's DH is though. |

I am not exactly the biggest Yankees fan in the world....but, as the sad ways of destiny go, just you wait, around July they are going to start a 30 game winning streak, they will sneak into the playoffs again, and again they are going to lose in the ALDS
