Anyone want anything for old Dell Poweredge servers on the cheap?
I figured this was too specific for Electronics for sale, but I have a pair of old Dell Poweredge 2550 servers and one Dell Poweredge 2500. All should be working fine - but aside from the hard drives everything else in them is of course horribly arcane. Anyways, if anyone wants any parts for them (or an entire server) and wants to throw me a few bucks, let me know.

Google the Poweredge models and you'll see the standard specs for 'em.
Something like 36GB 10k SCSI drives. Twin Pentium IIIs for a total processor speed of 1.5Ghz, I believe. CD-Roms and floppy drives. Hot-swappable redundant power supplies. RAID 5 built into the boards. I only saw 1 128mb stick of RAM in each, although there may be more RAM that I just haven't seen - I haven't really checked the specs on them at all, barely booted 'em up just to make sure they work. They were good servers back in the day - damn good servers. But they're pretty old now. I'm sure you could upgrade them a bit, but you're not gonna get anything super special out of them. |

ya thats ECC ram and xeon CPUs we has one here that I ended up drilling out the motherboard tray for and fitting a standard ATX motherboard on simply because the cases have such awesome cooling and are super secure.
How much? I needs a box to run my /b/ on. |

You want a whole server filled up with SCSI drives? The Poweredge 2550 or the 2500? The 2500 is one big, beefy, badass motherfucker. ITs got either 3 or 4 hot-swappable redundant power supplies, I forget how many. The cooling on it is beyond phenominal. The 2550s are pretty cool too, I think I'm gonna keep one of them for my own private stash.

Gonna bust 'em out tonight and get the figures on the RAM and processor speeds (I might have been way off on both, it may have twin 1.4Ghz processors and up to 1gb RAM in each). And gonna whipe the hard drives to the point that not even Chuck Norris could salvage any data off of them - but I'll let you know the final specs and a price tonight.

In either case, some kind of fan control utility would be helpful. Shouldnt need too much cooling in a home environment. I keep my appt at a steady 72* so I think I might be able to cope with the fans. Ive got a copy of server 2003 looking for a home too. Ive got to start hitting the books on my MCSE certs so this would be helpful. |

get 2008 server for mcse, 2003 is already borderline since ms is bound to release a server to match 7. |

I thought about that but the majority of out clients are using some derivative of server 2003 including small business server. The MCITP looks appealing because it will apply in the future but you can upgrade your certs once you have your MCSE by taking a couple more tests. Similar to the way they allowed you to update your certs between 2000 and 2003. Im definately looking forward to the server version of 7. We have only one client using Server 2008 right now and it basically works exactly the same as 2003 except its hard to find some things because it has a vista GUI.

Twin 1.1Mhz processors, 133mhz 2 Gig of RAM in each Lots of SCSI drives And for some reason neither will boot because of errors with the RAID Controllers...I wonder if the companies intentionally went in there any fucked with the jumpers or something to bust my balls. One gives me the error mentioned here: http://ask.adaptec.com/scripts/adapt...p_sp=undefined "Fatal Error: Controller kernel self test failed" although I have no idea where the J3 blue jumper is located that they want me to change. The other is just being a pain in the dick and won't detect the RAID controller. Anyways, whatever the issues, they're fixable and I'm trying to fix them before I unload these on someone else and get bitched at when they don't boot right up.
