BHN modem, can't get it to work through ethernet

the tech hooked it via USB... no idea why...

I need to hook up a router, but the cable modem isn't giving me anything when i plug in the ethernet cable... do I need to do anything else besides reset, etc

hook up the router, disconnect the power cable from the router. Reset the mdm. wait till the online or cable light comes on and stays solid, plug power into router. you should be online. If not, there is something wrong with the router.

Hook up the router and your pc to the router. Check to see if you have connectivity to the router. If you do, check to see if the router is getting a WAN IP. Call the ISP if its not. Sometimes if you have the modem hooked up directly to your pc you will have to do an ipconfig/release to get it to pull an IP for the router.

Call BHN and ask them for some help. Make sure you go through your setup step by step. I've had a couple of routers recently that simply will not pull an ip address unless you use their bullshit software to set it up.

Yea, if you didn't go through the routers initial config that might be your problem also.

Gotta blame every stupid fuck computer illiterate who just plugs in their router and never looks at the thing again unless it is to unplug and plug it back in. No setup, nothing.

Sooooo many people have no idea of the whole http://192.168.1.1 setup, and with wireless, just plugging in the router and connecting to it is not the safest thing to be doing.

I love selling people routers because its the easiest $50-$75 to make out there for a half an hour worth of work.

Thats the nature of the beast for techies that work directly with consumers. People that dont understand whats going on almost always assume that you are trying to screw them out of money.

Its pretty simple though, tell them to go to best buy and when they tell them its a minimum of $300 just to get a geek squad tech to your house they call you back pretty quick.

chances are the router has a battery backup.

You need to spoof your PC MAC address onto the router in order to get it to pull an IP address.

You COULD take it apart and pull the battery to reset the router but I've installed dozens and its 10x easier just to spoof the mac.

I was one weird ass Scientific Atlantic cable box from earth link that would not release a mac address even though it had no battery.. same solution though.

Spoofing the PC MAC onto the router? Router with a battery backup?? What the hell MAC address does an SA cable box read?? The TV's????????

Your posts confuses me in more ways than I care to count. I've never "spoofed a mac onto a router" before but something tells me could probably just do something simpler, like following the directions. I've NEVER once seen a router intended for home use (or otherwise) come with a built in battery backup, that just sounds ridiculous to me.

This person can't even get through a simple setup and you want them to open up their router and start pulling things out?? Holy shit, have you EVER done end user support before???????

We just loathe the proliferation of BAD information. That's how problems start.

If this guy is a field tech, putting words like this into a customer's head, that customer will think they know FUCKING EVERYTHING about their modem/router and will probably not want to cooperate when needed. Lack of cooperation on behalf of the customers = the more ISPs have to pay for technicians/contractors to fix the problem.

Pssh, face the proliferation of the information detrimental to the annihilation of the situation resulting from the subjugation of the animation delivered to the nation through the signal's propagation. Its a revelation that regardless of registration with a conglomeration providing technical information via vocalization the memorization of such information in relation to this situation will ultimately lead to a summation without requiring resource localization to the customers location. As such, the user overcoming such vexation with the utilization of this allocation of information leads inevitably to vindication for Notaldstyle!

Understand?

Bah, customers dont cooperate anyway. Its always easiest when they just accept the fact they dont know shit and dont even want to bother trying to fix things.

Maybe notlad is trying to make a point that something is so over someones head that they cant possibly comprehend it thereby forcing them to just let someone else do it for them.

...or he could just be educating the more tech savvy users here.
