The long and short of the article is that the new high end ATi card performs on par with (if not better than) nVidia's 260 GTX but costs $100 less. The card was just released this week and is pretty much sold out everywhere that it's been reasonably priced.......$300

I want to see Crossfire testing with these cards. I'm pretty sure that it'd destroy a 280 GTX.

I've only been using my laptop to game for the past 3-4 months and it's worked out OK thus far but I think I'm ready to move back into the big rig territory.

The Apples-to-Apples testing got me excited, definately might be rebuilding my HTPC into a desktop and get back into gaming.

doesnt destroy the 280 but it hangs side by side with it..
which isnt bad at all being as the 280 is 650 and 2 4870s are 600
i think with some more driver improvements it might gain a little more headroom on the 280 but definitely wont destroy it..

also they need a new driver if it hasnt came out yet for the temps..
the 4800s run super hot because of the fan profiles in the drivers arent allowing the fans to spin to 100%...its only 15% idle and 46% load so they are reaching temps from the high 80s to low 90s (c)

anyway definitely a great card..id like to sell my 8800gtx n pick up one of these for now and grab another down the road..

ATi is just warming up. I have 2x8800 GTS cards at the moment, but I'm sure on my next build I'll be going back to ATi.

Where did you see a 4870 Crossfire test?

I would find that hard to imagine since the 4870 is very nearly on top of the 260 and the 280 might barely do 50% performance over the 260. If the 4870 doubles up as well as some of the nVidia cards, I could easily see the 4870 in Crossfire beasting up the benchmarks.

as far as high-end video cards go. It's a good deal.

If you saw that and forgot to read everything else. The best nVidia card is $650.

If you're really looking for some realistic views, GO OUTSIDE. Maybe meet some real people

I thought you were in graphic arts? Most high end rendering stations and color correction stations have graphic cards over $60.

Most cadd based programs are still directx 9 at best. bentley Microstation is directx8 so a $60 video card will do everything a $300 card will with little loss in performance

Most graphics programs rely on the cpu to render images and use only the most basic graphics apis to display.

...and last I checked, most of the people in here AREN'T graphic designers.

My graphics workstation has a 89$ NVIDIA card, but my home machines still have the same 4mb AGP card I picked up in the late 90s, 4mb pci card or onboard.

4870's appear to just be Over Clocked 4850s.....I think if you have a water solution, you should be able to get the same performance and save $100 per card.

NewEgg has them on sale right now for $160 each.....so 2x4850's = $320.

Crossfire goodness......
